Board Member

Tom Robertson is a native and resident of Augusta, Georgia. He is a graduate of the Academy of Richmond County and of the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was the driver of the Ramblin’ Reck. He has been associated with the engineering firm Cranston Engineering Group, P.C. for his entire career, where he served as president for thirty-four years, offering professional engineering, land surveying, and city planning services for wide variety of projects and clients throughout the southeast. Some of the more prominent projects that he has designed include the Augusta River Walk, the Augusta Common, and the Big Canoe community, a conservation-focused development in the mountains of north Georgia. He currently fills a part-time role at Cranston and focuses his attention on assignments where his specialized talents can add value to the clients’ endeavors.

He is active in community and civic affairs. As a founding member of the Augusta Canal Authority, Tom led the establishment of the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area in 1996, testifying four times before Congressional committees to make this happen. He is president of the Trustees of the Academy of Richmond County, where for over twenty-five years he has led preservation of the board’s landmark historic buildings and the sustainment of the Porter Fleming Fund to benefit local arts and humanities In recognition of his community service, he has received several awards, including the annual Lester S. Moody Award from the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce and the national 2009 Community Service Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies. Mr. Robertson is an advocate of historic preservation and has restored four award-winning historic buildings in Augusta. He is a past president of Historic Augusta, Inc. and has been recognized by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation for lifetime achievement.

He is also an avocational historian, having authored many articles on local and regional history and papers on engineering, surveying, and city planning subjects, as well having written two full- length books on historical topics.

Tom is also interested in fishing, hiking, singing bass, woodworking, and gardening with native plants, flowers, and vegetables.
