And They Both Went Down into the Water

Promoting a Deeper Understanding of Augusta’s Rich History

After receiving a grant from the Porter Fleming Fund, Springfield Village Park Foundation commissioned the documentary They Both Went Down Into the Water, which explores the untold history of Springfield Village, one of Augusta’s earliest African American communities. Springfield Baptist Church, founded in 1773, stands as a symbol of resilience and Augusta’s rich history, not only as one of the oldest Black churches in the nation but also as the birthplace of Morehouse College.

Produced by film-maker Mark Albertin, the documentary reveals Springfield Village as a thriving community of free Blacks who lived and worked alongside Augusta’s broader population. Through interviews with historians and community members, Albertin sheds light on the often-overlooked history of a place where African Americans were not only present but influential long before emancipation.

Thanks to a $27,000 contribution from the Porter Fleming Fund, this exceptional film brings awareness to Springfield’s profound cultural impact on Augusta and the nation, ensuring that its legacy endures for future generations.”
