Paul Hammond Dunbar III

Paul Hammond Dunbar III was born in Augusta, Georgia on July 9, 1943. He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Paul H. Dunbar, Jr. He received his early education at Downer School in Beech Island, South Carolina and at William Robinson Elementary School and Langford Jr. High School in Augusta, Georgia.

He entered Richmond Academy in 1958 and graduated in 1961. While attending Richmond Academy, he was a member of the Key Club, an honorary scholastic organization sponsored by Kiwanis International. As a member of Richmond Academy's tennis team, he won Regional AAAA Championships in 1960 and 1961. After graduating from Richmond Academy, he attended Washington and Lee University and earned a B.A. degree in 1965. He graduated from Washington and Lee Law School in 1968, from which he received a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.

Paul served his country as a Captain in the United States Army Ordnance Corps in 1969-70 which included a tour of duty in Vietnam.

Following the completion of his military service, Paul returned to Augusta to begin the practice of law. He was a member of the Augusta Bar Association, the Georgia Bar Association and served as President of the Eminent Domain Section of the Georgia Bar Association.

From 1973 until 1992, he was a partner in the law firm of Nixon, Yow, Waller & Capers in Augusta, Georgia. In addition to his very active trial practice, he acted as City Attorney for the city of Augusta from 1984 until 1995. From time to time, he has been selected by the Attorney General of the State of Georgia to represent the State and its agencies and departments in litigation throughout the state of Georgia. His work for the Georgia Department of Transportation included the acquisition of the land required for the construction of Bobby Jones Expressway and Riverwatch Parkway. He was also involved in the development of the riverfront in downtown Augusta. He was instrumental in obtaining Congressional approval of such development and thereafter represented the City of Augusta in construction of the Augusta Riverwalk, the Augusta Marina and the Augusta Convention and Visitors Center. He also represented the Georgia Technology Authority in its acquisition of the property for the recently constructed Nathan Deal Campus for Innovation. He is a founding partner of the law firm of Capers, Dunbar, Sanders & Bruckner where he practiced law from June 1, 1992, until his retirement in 2024.

He has served as a Trustee and past president of Tuttle-Newton Home, as Trustee and past president of The Augusta-Richmond County Museum, as Advisory Director of First Union National Bank of Georgia and its successors, Wachovia National Bank and Wells Fargo National Bank. He also served as a Director of the Easter Seal Society of Augusta and as a Trustee of the Augusta Free School. He also served as a Director of the Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation. While serving as a Richmond Academy Trustee, he was instrumental in obtaining funding necessary to complete renovation of the exterior of the Richmond Academy Building.

Paul married the former Katherine Quint, and they had two daughters, Elizabeth Carter Dunbar and Katherine Hammond Dunbar.
