Cobbs Gwinn Nixon

Board Member

Cobbs Nixon was born in Augusta, GA, on February 1, 1941. He is the son of Scott Nixon and Caroline Hill Walker.

Cobbs graduated from Richmond Academy in 1959. His father and two uncles were graduates. His grandfather was a professor in 1883, his first cousin was the Latin and German language teacher in the 1980s, and his sister, wife, and three of his grandchildren attended and graduated.

After graduation, Cobbs attended the University of Virginia and received a bachelor’s degree. He also earned a commission in the U.S. Army (definitely aided by his ARC Jr. ROTC training).

Following his first military commitment, he enjoyed a sales career in the property and casualty insurance industry.

In 1968, his Army Reserve unit was activated and sent to Vietnam. Promoted to captain, and upon discharge, he was awarded an Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters. Nixon also received a medal from the Viet-Nam Army for participating in a community service project.

Following his father’s mantra, he has attempted to tithe to his church and to his community, to wit: serving as trustee, president, chairman, board member, and founder of numerous local and state professional, medical, historical, local and diocesan Episcopal church, sporting, and cultural organizations.

He is a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, married to Minta McDiarmid, with three children and five grandchildren.

Cobbs was elected to the Richmond Academy Board in 1996.
